Let's Go Rock Collecting

Read "Let's Go Rock Collecting" by Roma Gans to the class. Together, make a word web of the words used in the book about rocks and words that make rocks similar and different. Homework: each student will bring in 3 rocks the next day.

Materials: book, whiteboard for list


ACTIVITY 2
Comparing Rocks

Standards:
11.A.1e Arrange data into logical patterns and describe the patterns.
12.C.1b Compare large-scale physical properties of matter (e.g., size, shape, color, texture, odor).

Have students compare their rocks with the rocks their classmates have brought in. Have them sort rocks into piles based on similar characteristics (size, shape, color, texture). Discuss how they are different and similar and have each student sketch and color pictures of the different kinds of rock in their science journals.
