Kindergarten ANIMALS

ACTIVITY 1
Classification at the Zoo

Standards:
12.A.1a Identify and describe the component parts of living things (e.g., birds have feathers; people have bones, blood, hair, skin) and their major functions.
12.A.1b Categorize living organisms using a variety of observable features (e.g., size, color, shape, backbone).

During a field trip to the zoo, students will sketch pictures of animals based on their habitats. Each student should identify (sketch) three animals that live in water, three animals that live on land, three animals that live in the cold, and three animals that live in hot environments. Sketches will be done in their science journals and will be shared with the class (and assessed) the following day.

Materials: Permission slips!, science journals, pencils, camera





ACTIVITY 2
Interactive Bulletin Board: ANIMALS & HUMANS

Standards:
12.A.1a Identify and describe the component parts of living things (e.g., birds have feathers; people have bones, blood, hair, skin) and their major functions.
12.A.1b Categorize living organisms using a variety of observable features (e.g., size, color, shape, backbone).

After a class discussion comparing and contrasting humans and animals (both need air, water, reproduce, etc), students will be asked to hep teacher list the differences between the two species. After a list has been made, students will add visuals to the lists by cutting pictures out of magaizines or drawing their own.

Materials: magazines, paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue
